Project

Construction started on Phase 1 from US 98 to SR 44 in February 2018. The 13-mile stretch is expected to be completed by 2022. The funding for this project is based on Turnpike tolls and concession revenues. This highway expansion is the largest expansion since the mid-1950’s. The current Suncoast Parkway stretches just under 60 miles from Hillsborough County to Citrus County. With this ambitious new plan, the road would extend another 150 miles to Georgia. The economic impact to this region could be a boom for local businesses and the local construction industry.

Challenge

The challenges encountered during compaction grout installation were minimal:
• Critical path construction schedule

Solution

Helicon worked alongside the general contractor & the engineer teams, to develop a cost-conscious compaction grout project submittal. The Compaction Grout Project was designed to stabilize and improve subsurface conditions by means of compaction grouting within Pond 2-5G in the vicinity of Ramp A between Stations 1268+30 and 1268+80 (in the vicinity of Boring AN-6). Compaction grouting occurred prior to the retention pond construction and excavation. Efficient planning & coordination was key to overcoming the challenges & limitations.
The purpose of the compaction grouting was to compact, plug, and seal potential avenues for further migration of the overlying soils, thereby minimizing the possibility of future subsidence and distress to the proposed improvements. The compaction grout work was successfully completed on-time and within budget.
